I’m very excited to be travelling to Nepal in October as a volunteer member of a medical/dental team.  Our 30 member group will be partnering with Nepali Doctors and Dentists to provide free health care, including a well-baby clinic, to disadvantaged families living in the Churia hills, 150 km SW of Kathmandu.  In addition, we will present clean water and sanitation workshops, a children’s program and other educational opportunities to interested local groups.

Our team co-ordinator and Nepal Project Manager is Elsie James, a 77 year-old dynamo, who has been working with the underprivileged in Nepal since 1996.  She is affiliated with the Canadian charitable organization, Medical Mercy Canada. MMC is also involved in humanitarian service on the Thai/Burma border, north-eastern India, Sri Lanka  and the Ukraine.
One of the Nepal  projects that has really touched my heart is MMC’s support of the Children’s Future Organization –CFO- Nepal www.cfonepal.org  This organization provides a safe haven for orphaned, displaced and abandoned children, many of whom are victims of the 10-year Maoist insurgency – a civil war that ended in 2006.  CFO provides shelter and care for these needy children and strives to equip them with knowledge & skills that will enable them to become independent, contributing members of society in the future.
I’ve had a dream for many years….. a dream to trek to Everest Base Camp.  After our Health Camp I hope to fulfill that dream.  To make my trek more meaningful, I’d like to raise funds for the Children’s Future Organization – Nepal, to help these underprivileged children have a better chance of fulfilling some of their own future dreams.

My goal is to raise $4,195 - the net gain in elevation in meters I hope to attain from Kathmandu to Kala Pattar, the highest point on my trek!!  Will you make a pledge to help me do that?  The funds would help establish an agricultural training program at the new CFO home in Dhading Besi.  There, the children will be able to continue their academic education as well as gain practical skills that will enable them to return to their roots in rural village life, if that is their future choice.
