Dr. Audrey Achtymichuk from Calgary joined the team on 5 February 2015 to help with this critical project. Training medics in the facility that MMC helped to develop creates a self supporting model.
Dr. Myron and Dr. Audrey Achtymichuk provided training for the 7 medics who work at the Medical Centre . The medics have received training from MMC health care professionals for 15 years now so their classes were mainly reviewing and upgrading.
There were 4 very ill patients in the Inpatient Ward when Dr Myron and Dr Audrey visited in February. One patient died of Tuberculosis and complications of HIV. The other went home knowing she had contracted HIV. To other patients had severe mental illness, possibly Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.. The doctors faced medical problems every day which they could not treat. When the young medics are faced with similar situations, they have feelings of inadequacy and despair. Part of the MMC team’s task is to renew hope in the minds of the medics so they will carry on the essential health services for the villagers, their people.
