School Opened in Honour of Bruce and Kathy Macmillan
On May 2, 2016 MMC opened 10 new classrooms at Shree Manarupee Secondary School, Dhading, Nepal to replace ones demolished in the April 2015 earthquake.
Four of those rooms were sponsored by the Macmillan Memorial Fund. This was money contributed by the staff of the Sturgeon Community Hospital of St Albert, Alta., Canada, as a memorial to nurse, Kathy MacMillan and her husband Bruce. The Macmillan's were in Nepal trekking in Langtang National Park, celebrating Kathy's retirement and their wedding anniversary, when they were caught in the massive Avalanche and mudslide triggered by the slide.
Their sons Jay and Fraser came to Nepal to attend a special ceremony planned for the first anniversary of the quake that wiped out the entire village of Langtang. Jay also attended the opening of the school built to honour the memory of his parents. The photo of Bruce and Kathy was presented to the school and will hang in the staff room. A memorial plaque is posed on the exterior wall of the school in remembrance of Kathy and Bruce.
