MMC is Helping to Shatter Barriers for Women in Nepal

June 12, 2018
People often forget there are people out there that have far less than most of us in Western countries. Women are hit especially hard, and Medical Mercy Canada is doing everything it can to ease their burdens.
The women of Nepal have a far different life than many women in Canada. Women seldom speak in the presence of men. However, that is changing, which is empowering more women. There is a growing movement of women who desire to be self-sufficient and to join the workforce. Skill development is growing in importance for women in Nepal as the country shifts towards addressing women’s issues, rights and education. This is leading to an urgent need for skills and leadership development.
The Single Women’s Hostel in Dhadubg Besi, which has been open for more than a year, with the help of Medical Mercy Canada, is a hostel that provides a safe place for women to create a sense of community. Not only does it create a safe place for women to learn and support each other it also fosters a sense of entrepreneurship in the women that live there. The hostel is located near many government buildings as well as a college. This provides the hostel with clientele, which makes the hostel not only more self-sufficient, but it also contributes to the employment and training of women in business management, bookkeeping, food preparation and serving. The hostel teaches workshops for any women that are interested. These workshops include courses in language and literacy, leadership, computer skills, sewing, plumbing and electricity. The women of Nepal are ready and willing to break the barriers of what constitutes “women’s work.” Medical Mercy Canada is committed to continuing its work with the hostel and staying involved in its future programming. Medical Mercy Canada cannot do this alone. It needs help. By donating, you can ensure that these women can support their families and have access to the tools they need to succeed.
