"My Story" - Single Women's Group in Nepal

January 22, 2017
It is unfathomable for women living in modern society to know that somewhere in the world a woman's marital status could mean living an improvised life and being shunned from society.  There are women today who struggle for recognition, respect and even fundamental rights like safety, food and shelter. Although men too have that difficulty because of various socio-political as well economic factors, women are doubly disadvantaged because of the added burden of patriarchal institutions that work against them. Medical Mercy Canada partners with Project for a Village for development of women's support programs in Nepal.  Below are some of their stories, .

Sani
I am Sani, mother of four sons and a widow. My husband committed suicide. I am a single women desperately seeking for some helping hands. Avoided by the society, finding hard to get into any sort of job. Living in super poverty and someday I’ll die in the same way. With your help I wish I could survive and my soul hopes you will help. The earthquake took away my home, cattle, clothes, food grains and everything. I have an injury in my neck for which I haven’t been able to see the doctor because of lack of money. I am really desperate for your help, I don’t know when I will get to eat or not, don’t have anything to change. I’ve been living in a small cottage. It’s time to take out grains from the field and there’s this problem of storage which is why I have to go to my mother’s place to sleep. (I had been living in the grain storage shed) Now I am devoted towards you and Project for a Village and hope you will help me to help myself
PictureBimala
My name is Bimala and this is my story. I am the eldest daughter of Megh Prasad and Lok Kumari. I was born in 2042-12-30. (1985 AD) I had a very good childhood.
I got married in the year 2056 (when 14), then I was studying in class nine. And when I came back home I could not get time to read which is why my study had its limit. Even though I wanted to study, dreams do not come true. I and my husband both are into agriculture which is also our source of living. Two years after marriage we had a son. My age was not that much so I had to go through different problems. Later, I gave birth to my daughter and we were very happy. We were living with father, mother, brother in law, his spouse and us. Only relying on agriculture was not going to be enough which is why we opened and electrical gadget shop. Our kids were very little. One day my husband asked me if I wanted to pursue my studies, I was so happy.
In the year 2067-2-5 (when 25), I was admitted in Nilkantha High School. After a month an earthquake hit us hard which blew away my dreams. In 2067, my husband, Asadh, 20, returning from my brother's wedding on a motor bike got into an accident and later while being taken to the hospital he died. After this accident even I wanted to commit suicide but then I am a mother and I could not for the kids. Later, I gave my SLC (School Leaving Certificate) and passed with 59%. I also gave my +2 and passed it.  A woman’s life without her husband around the house can be very hectic.
A woman has to think of every step. My life is full of darkness right now. I hope after my children start working, it will be better.
In the road to tomorrow, so that there might be some alternatives, I took a training program provided by Project for Village and Medical Mercy Canada. I am also a representative of single women as a vice president.
Just by dreaming big, nothing is going to happen. By making women's sanitary kits with the help of DFG we hope to earn our living. Elsie mom is a very respectful person; she is an icon for all of us. Because of her love and affection we are being able to live our lives. Even I try to walk in her foot steps and try to make a difference.

Bhim
My name is Bhim Kumari and I have a son. I got married in the year 2058 B.S. (2001 AD) I was only 14 when I got married. That very year my mother passed away. After her demise, every responsibility of my home came to me because I was the most senior member. My brother was just born with a sister of seven years and another one four years old. My father got very frustrated because the same year my brother was born and my mother passing away. The responsibility of taking care of my family came onto my shoulders. In the year 2060 (2 years later) even my father died. Even though I was married I took care of my brothers and sisters. My husband used to work in New Delhi, India in Relaxo company. He died after four years of marriage and at that time my son was just a year old. I’ve been looking out for everyone in my family and this is how I’m spending my single life.
